Calibrated Photometry of F and G Type Stars
Group research project, Modern Observational Techniques course, Dr. Matthew Penny, LSU | 2024
Operated the 20-inch HRPO telescope across multiple observation runs (several solo) for a group research project on calibrated photometry of F and G type stars, executing observation sequences and making real-time decisions on data quality under varying conditions.
Tested and characterized the linearity of the telescope's CCD detector across its full intensity range; authored the paper's appendix on CCD linearity methodology and the cutoff determination used to ensure downstream data quality.
Wrote Python code to organize and filter image data, including an automated warning-flag system to mark frames with pixels brighter than the linearity cutoff. Contributed additional analysis code across other parts of the project.
Multi-Filter Imaging of the Orion Nebula
Course project, Modern Observational Techniques, Dr. Matthew Penny, LSU | 2024
Captured a 3×3 grid of images of the Orion Nebula in three color filters (81 total exposures) using the 20-inch HRPO telescope.
Wrote Python code to reduce and combine all 81 images into a final mosaicked, color-composite image. Performed post-processing to remove hot pixels and adjust color balance.
V854 R Coronae Borealis Variable Star Research
Undergraduate research and Distinguished Communicator project with Dr. Geoffrey Clayton, LSU | 2023
Worked under Dr. Geoffrey Clayton, a leading expert on R Coronae Borealis variable stars, on his ongoing research into V854 Cen using approximately 100 years of archival data from the Harvard Observatory Plate Lightcurve database.
Organized roughly 2,000 plate images per star across V854 and two nearby comparison stars in Excel, then wrote Python code to import the organized data and generate light curves comparing V854's brightness against the limiting magnitude across the full archival timespan.
Modeling the Microlensing of Circumbinary Systems
Final research presentation, Modern Optics, Dr. Gabriela Gonzalez, LSU | 2024
Distilled a high-level astronomical optics research paper on triple-lens system modeling into a ten-minute presentation accessible to an undergraduate physics audience.
Covered the lens equation, generalizations to N-lens systems, the 18th-order polynomial roots used in triple-lens magnification calculations, and the application of the model to the one circumbinary planetary system detected through microlensing.
